ORIGIN
Working Towards a Brighter Future
Helping Hearts for the Homeless was created in 2010 by a group of dorm-mates, named
Farhad Alikozai, Sunny Ahmad, Sunny Meghpara, and Alex Workman, at the University of California, Irvine. When they witnessed the amount of food wasted at their local dining common, they were all inspired to start an organization that would actively help the homeless. With a tremendous amount of passion and hard-work, they were able to coordinate interactive events with the local homeless community through trips to Skid Row, volunteering at Laundry Love and Santa Ana Civic Center, and hosting collection drives which included donated clothes, shoes, and basic toiletries. At the events, each club member was able to make a difference in the homeless community with the 20-30 big bags of donation along with plenty of handmade care packages. By doing interactive activities as well as educating the club about homelessness, everyone was able to grasp a new perspective on this community which motivated them to go out and do more! The passion and heart that everyone shared for this club has greatly contributed to making the new club a success.

"We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved, and uncared for is the greatest poverty.”
– Mother Teresa

THE HOMELESS COMMUNITY
There are many factors that contribute to a person becoming homeless:
Domestic/family violence
Financial Difficulties
House affordability stress
Lack of Health Care
Substance Abuse
and more…

Homeless is a type of situation, not someone's identity
According to United States Department of Housing and Development’s (HUD) 2015 reports, over half a million people in the United States are homeless. One quarter of the
homeless are children and ten of thousands are veterans. The most alarming fact of all is that 1 in 5 homeless people suffer from untreated severe mental illness.
